Gallup, NM to Denver, CO to Spencer, IA to Chicago, IL to Phoenixville, PA to ...

Two weeks ago, I set out on a road trip to find a new life. I left all of my belongings in a 10X10 storage unit, piled my clothes in the car, put on a Beck CD, and hit the road. I had no destination and no plan for the future. Don't get me wrong--it's not that I didn't want a plan, it's just that a plan never worked out...I must have applied for 40 different jobs and researched 4 different cities where I wanted to live. Nothing was pulling me in any one direction. I felt totally rootless and fickle; to sum it up, I felt like a really big loser. I can't say that I'm feeling much better about myself today--I still don't have a job or a place to live--but seeing all of my old friends reminded me that there are people out there who care about me and don't want to see me starving in a gutter somewhere...that was comforting.

While winding my way across the country, I discovered several things: you cannot find a book-on-tape anywhere in the state of Ohio; male drivers cannot stand to let female drivers pass them on the highway; people stare at you when you are trying to change clothes while driving; and, more often than not, mapquest does not give you the right directions.

Despite these difficulties, I am currently having fun with my friends in Phoenixville, PA. It seems like it is in the middle of nowhere, but apparently, it's within commuting distance of Philly--so there is actually stuff to do here...there's even a Nordstrom's Rack with tons of fabulous discounted shoes! Anyway, tomorrow I think I'm going to drive down to North Carolina or thereabouts...then it's on to B'ham AL to visit my family...

After that, I must decide where to put my Civic to rest and live the life of an upstanding, tax-paying citizen without being "stifled by dryrot" (Credo by Jack London).

Until then,

I suppose there is always a chance of being stifled by dryrot, no matter what you do.

And just as a side note, I don't mind letting female drivers pass me as long as they flash me...a smile or something.
